Something unique happened in my industry – I became the first hairstylist (specifically a Curly Hair Specialist) that broke the major rule of NEVER let your client do their own hair in your salon – and yet…it worked!

I teach The MAP Method of product application and I ‘did’ my clients hair, spoke and verbally explained everything and showed my clients in the mirror what I was doing and even wrote it all out for them to take home….but that was not enough.

What was missing was Muscle Memory and Guidance – so, I threw this rule of never letting my client do their hair and created a Boot Camp Service Experience with YOU applying the products as I GUIDE you through the process and when you left…YOU did your hair.

My clients started walking around with AWESOME hair that drew genuine compliments, reviews of my work went viral with People of Curl telling others about FINALLY learning how to manage their hair for the FIRST TIME IN THEIR LIFE.

If you go to my Facebook Page (Scott Musgrave Hair) you will see before and after shots – you have to know that EVERY photo you see is the client coming in with what they USED to do and in 2 hours you see the ‘after’ photo? IT WAS DONE BY THEM WITH ME GUIDING THEM! Pretty cool.

Annie is a client of mine and she sent me a wonderful document that helps others to find a stylist and I want you to make sure you have all your bases covered to locate someone that will help you to achieve your goals with your hair – here it is (and a big thank YOU to Annie):

ANNIE’s PERFECT HAIRSTYLE CHECKLIST

Try going through this checklist before you head to the salon next:

1. Research: If you don’t have a trusted stylist, look at the salon reviews over a period of time; ask women you see where they got their fabulous look. Do your homework! It’s your hair, and you need to know what it is you want before you go.

2. Pictures: Remember, your stylist can work all over your head, not inside. It is important to take some pictures along to give her an idea of your taste and what exactly you are looking for. If you have a photo of your own hair that was just what you wanted, take it with you, even if it may mean just trims to grow out, or something vastly different from your current look. If its a celebrity or Pinterest style, take a moment to see if its something you could do with your hair, and at home. Be honest with yourself!

3. Communicate: If you think that there are certain non-negotiable elements to your haircut, for eg: length of hair, bang etc, make sure you communicate. You can’t scream at the stylist later if you wanted to retain your waist length hair which she chopped it up to your shoulder! Read some articles, or ask friends who have had great styles, what “words” clearly communicate what you want. “Trim the dust off the ends” (do not cut even 1/4” off my hair!) “Piece-y” “texturize” “lift”.

Eye Contact/Body Language/Hand Gestures: Our interpretation of the world is different from each other. BE SURE you and the stylist are not looking at one another in the mirror. Make face-to-face eye contact, to be sure you are being heard. The meaning of ‘shoulder length’ for you may be different from how the stylist thinks of it. You must try to show with your hands and actions what exactly is the look that you are expecting to achieve. Touch your desired finished (not wet) length – shoulder, chin, ear, etc.) Lift your hair to show what kind of height or volume you feel you need.

4. Tell the stylist about your current products: Share what products you are currently using, and why. This will help the stylist to get a sense of what you want your hair to do, and can result in some great, on-point recommendations to get there. It may save some expense if your current products can do what the stylist is using in the salon.

5. Expectations: Let your stylist know your expectation regarding the ability of you in re-creating your awesome new look at home. Be sure the stylist goes slowly enough, and allows you questions, about what and how she’s using product and tools.

6. Reality: If you take a photo of a long, thick-haired model with rioting curls, and your own hair is thin and straight – it is just not going to happen at home, even if your highly skilled stylist can do it there at the salon with her skills and experience. Chances still are, that the cut on that celebrity might not look the same on your hair! Factor in hair texture, color, thickness, curl, fall etc. Even if you got it all, remember that celebs walk with an entourage whose only job is to making them glamorous at all times. Nope not possible for us all, therefore go with an open mind and be realistic! That does not mean that your stylist cannot help you get the feeling, mood or style you want with your own hair. This is a point where you need to know what you want, and then know what your own hair could be capable of doing! Ask yourself, do I want to change my hair, or is there another part of my life that is bothering me. (For me, it’s my health that I cannot control, so sometimes I jump to changing my hair, which I can control (sort of).)

7. Friends: Our friends know exactly who we are and what we want, right? We value their opinions, and their FEELINGS. While we can, establish a good bond with the stylist, remember and communicate that the stylist ultimately works for you, the client. It’s easier to “break up” if you haven’t become best friends, and its easier to give gentle, tactful and honest feedback both directions.

Before leaving and knowing you won’t be back because it didn’t go the way it should have, let your salon owner have some honest, clear feedback about why your expectation may not have been met. It’s only fair that the salon and stylist have the opportunity to learn and grow, and give both the client and stylist to have the very best experience.

Once you find the perfect one for you, stick on to them and don’t let go!
